Don't forget about boots and gloves.  Most track day orgs these days are requiring gauntlet style gloves that extend past the wrist.  A good pair of racing style boots (Sidi, Alpinestars, etc) are also well worth the money.

The general rule I've always been told for pants/jackets is that the zipper must cover 75% of the circumference.  Different clubs have different rules though.  Some still allow textile in the beginner groups while others are requiring 1 piece suits.  I'd say you'd be fine just getting a pair of pants and possibly finding a tailer to extend the zipper.

NewEnough sells some really nice stuff and you can sometimes find a really good deal on closeout items.

welcome

If you can swing the $$$ get a decent set of custom leathers. You don't need $2k kit but a custom two-pc is so nice. The perfect shape for you, the armor is where you need it and stays there. If you use it on the street, it's easy to un-zip the jacket from the pants. The zippers are usually 90-95% wrap around so they should hold up well in a crash if it's from a good manufacturer.

I have a Syed two pc and it was the best money I've ever spent. Although, if you happen to be one of the lucky ones where off the rack stuff fits well, find a nice set on close out somewhere.

Quick list:

Komodo
Syed
Z - Custom
Pilot
ETC...
